As followers of Christ in leadership, we are called to shepherd God's sheep. Often times I think we forget as leaders, we are sheep ourself. Nevertheless, here are a few facts about sheep.
1. Sheep Stink.
People are people and sin is sin. Anytime you are dealing with people even God's people, you will get dirty. Remember, dirt stinks. Some want to paint church leadership as some eloquent lofty position. The reality is far from the truth. When you deal with sheep, get ready to get your hands dirty!
2. Sheep Bite.
In leadership, It is not a matter of If you will get hurt-but when you will get hurt. Sheep are one of the most stubborn and stupid animals. People will sometimes bite you. A pastor friend some time ago said, "The ones in your church that chew you up by loving you, are the first ones to spit you out." Of course this is not always the case. Just remember some of these realities.
3. Sheep are stupid.
As human beings with a sinful nature, we do some stupid things. So is the case, with people in church. The first thing we say every time we do something stupid is,"What was I thinking?" Because of our stupidity, we must solely rely on our Savior Jesus Christ.
4. Sheep need a shepherd.
God's people need our help and comfort. If the shepherd is not watchful over his sheep, wolves and other predators can prey on his sheep. Without the shepherd, the sheep would most surely die. This is a picture of how we all need Christ. David said, "The Lord is my shepherd, i do not lack. I have everything I need. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside still waters, He restores my soul." What a shepherd we have in Jesus!
